Want to make a difference? Here’s what you can do this Earth Day

By your powers combined

Earth Day is here and a certain phrase rings in the air; “Reduce, reuse, and recycle”. A phrase you have probably heard so many times over. But have you practiced it? How much do you reduce, reuse, and recycle in your daily life? For many of us it’s probably less than we like. This could be due to budget or even simply unawareness. Whatever reason it may be here are some easy things all of us can do on Earth Day and beyond to make a difference.

Check yourself and Reduce

How do you get to class or work? Do you drive in your own car? Do you carpool? Walk? Bike? Transportation and how we get around contributes largely to our carbon footprint. If we drive our own car we are guilty of letting off a lot of carbon dioxide emissions. If we carpool we let off a little less. But if we opt to walk or bike we are giving Mother Nature some air to breath. Next time you leave your dorm, apartment, or house take a moment and think how you can get from point A to point B with little emission as possible.

Go reusable

Try to opt for reusable water bottles, shopping bags, and anything else you can. Reusable water bottles save tons of plastic from polluting our earth, and when I say tons I mean TONS. It is estimated that about eight million tons of plastic enter our oceans each year. Using things like metal bottles and fabric bags cost a little extra upfront, but they save our planet from paying the cost. And also being a student with [UNiDAYS]( can help you save on those items.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle

This may sound overstated but choosing a blue bin to throw your recyclables in makes a big difference. These recyclables can then be actually recycled and not collecting in a landfill with trash. Not only can you recycle bottles and boxes, but you can recycle clothes and households too (just in a different way). Donate items rather than just tossing them; shelters and thrift stores are always accepting. That shirt may no longer be your style, but it might be someone else's.

So next time we hear “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” I hope it's because we are the ones encouraging it and doing it. If everyone made these small changes imagine what it could add up to; less emissions, less plastic in our oceans, and less trash in our landfills. Let’s celebrate Earth Day right!
