When we found out that LEGENDARY hip-hop group A Tribe Called Quest was dropping a new album ('We got it from Here… Thank You 4 Your service') in mid-November, after an 18-year-LONG hiatus and mere months after the untimely death of founder MC Phife Dawg, we knew we were about to hear something truly special.

Pioneers of the hip-hop scene as we’ve come to know and love it, founding members Q-Tip, the late Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White are heralded as “the most intelligent, artistic rap group during the 1990s” and top list after list of “Best Rap Groups of All Time”. Paving the way for artists like Kanye West, Andre 3000, Kendrick Lamar and Talib Kweli (also featured on their new album along w/ the likes of Elton John, Jack White, Consequence & Busta Rhymes), their 6th studio album is receiving widespread acclaim from both critics and fans alike.

A little Tribe 101 for you, here’s one of our favorite throwbacks of all time “Can I Kick It”. The accompanying music video embodies 90s hip-hop culture in its entirety, so soak it all in. On a personal note, “Can I Kick It” has managed to sneak its way onto almost every playlist I’ve ever made.

What’s kind of amazing about 'We got it from Here' is how organically Tribe it feels, even after all of this time. It’s not simply an ode to the golden days of hip-hop or a rush job due to torpedoed careers (opposite, actually), funnily enough, it doesn’t even feel like a reunion record at all. Phife & Tip’s chemistry is palatable and realer than ever. Their message is more important than ever.

The first track off of the new album, “We the People... “, is a banger. From the very start, it’s clear that the all-mighty Tribe gave us just the right album at just the right time.
