The good, the bad, and the ugly: VMAs 2018

Video killed the radio star

While MTV isn't really known for their music videos anymore, they still put on a show with the Video Music Awards. This year's ceremony was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City and the stars in attendance did not disappoint. Actually, I take that back and you'll see why later in this post. Perhaps the golden age of Awards Shows has finally come to an end. Even the Oscars and Grammys have been a snooze fest as of late. Below are the good, the bad, and the ugly moments of the 2018 VMAs. Do you agree with our picks? What was your favorite part?

The Good

Jennifer Lopez was this year's Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award winner. She performed in front of a fake 6 train in bedazzled Timbs and didn't disappoint by going through her biggest hits from the year.

As if we couldn't love Shawn Mendes any more. He took to the stage to sing "In My Blood", which is definitely one of the better songs off of his most recent album. Towards the end of the song water fell from the ceiling and drenched the singer in the best way possible.

Not necessarily good but certainly good speculation. I wonder what tea they were spilling. Just LOOK at the face Nicki made when Ariana whispered to her.

While they didn't get to perform in the actual show (they merely presented an award), the Backstreet Boys proved that their spot in boy band history was well deserved with their pre-show performance. Seriously, they sound just as good now with their new song as they did when "I Want It That Way" hit the airwaves.

The Bad

Overall the production was a mess and the show was pretty boring. Watching from home was a pretty painful experience and I'm surprised I even have ANY good moments from the show on this list. I mean, the fact they didn't even properly mic Shawn Mendes when he announced an award is just... bad form. Even Ariana Grande looked bored during her performance of "God is a Woman."

I mean... Post Malone TRIED to put on a good show but this rendition of "Dream On" just seemed lazy and kind of awkward. Then again, I didn't know Post Malone could play an instrument so maybe it was ok?

Tiffany Haddish is funny. Kevin Hart is funny. Their upcoming movie with them together looks funny. But their roast... oof. Take a look for yourself but between a Fifth Harmony diss and the botching of Camilla Cabello's name, this earns a spot on our bad list.

The Ugly

Madonna paid tribute to Aretha Franklin with a six-minute speech. That being said, between her weird get-up and the speech being more about Madonna rather than Aretha.... it's safe to say there's good reason that it drew criticism.

Camilla Cabello winning Video of the Year and Artist of the Year over acts like Drake, Cardi B, and Childish Gambino. While Havana is a cute video... it's just NOT what I'd consider video of the YEAR.
