This year might be going at breakneck speed, but May has arrived and there’s plenty of things to look forward to, and we’re not just talking about those final deadlines. We’ve called on our friends at DesignMyNight for the low-down on the most epic goings-on across the UK.
From beach clubs along the Thames to dedicated pizza festivals; don’t be afraid to give yourself a break from the books.
Like your coffee with booze in it? The Espresso Martini Society is popping up in Soho this May, and you’re gonna want to blow your entire loan on the drinks. Serving the largest selection of espresso martini variations in the world, the creative list includes everything from The A-List Avocado to The Merry Berry.
Pining for some beach action without the hassle of leaving London? Fulham Beach Club will sort you out with sand, beach huts, daybeds and non-stop Club Tropicana vibes. Jimmy's BBQ Club and Pizza Shed will be on hand with the summer eats, and the bar will be serving your favourite boozy libations. In terms of entertainment, expect boozy brunches and yoga classes, not to mention mini croquet, table tennis and shuffleboard.
Reckon that there’s no such thing as too much cheese? Live out your dairy dreams at the London Cheese Project, where you can taste an abundance of fromage creations from artisan British cheesemongers and makers. There’ll be talks and mozzarella making workshops at this day event, and you can feast on street food from The Cheese Truck and Kappacasein (if you’re still hungry, that is). Thirsty? Enjoy the ultimate pairing with a handmade vino or Fourpure beer.
If you’re keen to do something cultured this May, make sure you see a show at Croydonites Festival of New Theatre. Championing the best local theatrical talent, the event brings a diverse line-up of shows, taking place everywhere from boxing academies to train stations. Whether it’s a one-woman show tackling feminism, a performance of Half Breed from the Soho Theatre, or an exquisite routine from a dance company, there’s something for everyone.
Reckon you could spot a liar from a mile off? With a cult-like following after sell-out shows in Tokyo and Tel Aviv, Perfect Liars Club is bringing its storytelling show to London, and you’ve got to get involved. You’ll watch four people tell a tale (expect the hilarious to the downright weird) but one will be a total fibber, and it’s your job to do some cross-examining to weed out who it is.
If Donna Summer is your spirit animal and Chic’s best hits are your go-to; Exhibit B are throwing a disco brunch this bank holiday, and it’s got your name written all over it. With pictures of Rupaul's Drag Race alumni plastering the walls and general cool-as- hell décor, cue a fun afternoon of disco hits, diva drag dancers and a glitter station where you can shimmer up your look. Your ticket to funky town will include an hour and a half of free-flowing fizz, as well as a delicious dish from their brunch menu.
There’s nothing like chilling out in a beer garden come spring, but a beer garden with a colourful crazy golf course? Plonk have taken over the Sidewinder’s outdoor space, moving in their crazy nine-hole course with gravity-defying loops, daring drops, ramps and hills. To reward your golfing efforts, they offer a wallet-friendly deal of six cans of beer for £15 and you can refuel on dirty vegan dogs, filthy buns and fondue fries once you’re done.
Sucker for fancy dress? Scotland’s biggest 1920s night is putting on a Gatsby speakeasy this month, and it’s gonna require your sparkliest, flapperiest get-up. Think secret passwords, hush hush cocktails, prohibition-inspired singers and burlesque acts. In true ‘20s form, you can take part in some criminal gambling with your Gatsby dollar bills, and the winner will go home with a bottle of Champagne.
Two words: pizza festival. Taste and Liquor have hacked your cheesy dreams and gathered over 10 of the UK's best independent pizzerias to tantalise your tastebuds. You can spend your dough on everything from cheese-drenched margheritas and deep-filled meaty feasts to Nutella marshmallow pizzas. Craft beer and prosecco cocktails will be flowing, and if you need a break in between slices, watch an ‘80s kids movie, play some retro games or shoot some hoops.
Thought you’d heard it all? Think again because you can now do a 5K run, whilst eating pizza slices. This kooky event originates from the US, and it means die-hard pizza fans can enjoy their favourite food whilst exercising. The pizza will be supplied by Dominos, and you’ll get a pizza-themed medal and entry to an afterparty with music, DJs, and of course - more pizza.
