The stay at home degree

It's that time of year when everybody around you seems to be preparing to pack up their lives into a couple of boxes and a suitcase, and shipping off to university. Late nights and wild parties lie ahead, but is leaving home and going to uni all it's cracked up to be? You tell me. Although people tend to take the ‘do it properly or don’t do it at all’ approach to uni, there are a lot of benefits from graduating whilst staying a little closer to home just like I did.

Setting Your Own Hours

By doing your studies whilst staying at home you have a lot more flexibility. You get a few extra minutes in bed, don’t have to travel for miles to get to lectures, and you might even have the time to get a head start on dinner!

Personalising Your Workspace

Although staying in halls is all fun and games, it has its downsides. As Allie described in her Dorm Room Ideas post, they have absolutely zero character and you’re fairly restricted with what you can do to jazz them up. By staying at home you have the freedom to decorate your space however you want; you need to remember that you are trying to create an environment that will provide ultimate productivity, but that doesn’t mean you can’t make it super cute to boot! ‌

‌Snack time

Revising in the student library, or in the comfort of your own home? I know which I’d prefer! Sometimes studying is hard, especially when the dreading ‘snack attack’ hits… It’s easy to give in to fast food cravings when you’re out and about, this is when studying in your own space comes in handy. Check out some of my favourite healthy, homemade snacks here! ‌

‌ Money, money, money!

Whether you choose to study a mile, or one hundred miles away from university, the financial side of things is always a tough one. We all plan to strut onto campus dressed to the nines, go to the gym five days a week, and have the intention of being a healthy eating student, but when it comes to it, do we actually have the dollar? By no means is studying at home ‘cheap’, but compared to the travel costs, halls deposits and pricey student shops you have to deal with when you travel the country, I can guarantee you’ll save yourself a penny or two.

The comfort of the familiar

One of the most common reasons that people go to university (apart from the obvious studying part!) is getting as far away from your parents as possible. But there’s nothing to be ashamed about when it comes to the comfort of what you know; nobody can deny that there’s nothing they love more than getting into their own bed.
