Finance Deadlines 25/26

When to apply for student finance 2026: deadline tracker & doc checklist

It’s that time of year. The sun is (maybe?) out, exams are looming, and there’s that one piece of life admin that absolutely everyone dreads: applying for student finance.

Figuring out when to apply feels like a race against a clock you can’t see. Get it sorted now, and you can focus on the fun prep, like reading our Freshers’ survival guide. Miss the deadline, however, and you risk starting term without a loan–a recipe for a very stressful first week.

But don’t panic! We’ve got your back. Here’s your personal cheat sheet for the entire 2026 application, packed with all the key dates and the ultimate checklist of every document you’ll need.

Why you absolutely, positively can’t miss the deadline

Let’s be real. If your application is late, Student Finance can’t guarantee you’ll get your money in time for the start of your course.

This means no money for:

Getting your application in on time means your loan lands in your bank account right at the start of term. It’s the single best thing you can do for a stress-free start to uni.

The 2026 student finance deadline tracker

Heads up: these dates are based on the typical annual schedule. For the final, confirmed dates, you should always double-check the official Student Finance website.

  • Applications open (new & returning students): usually around late February/early March 2026. This is the time to start getting your documents together.
  • Deadline for new students: the main deadline is normally around the end of May 2026. You need to have your application submitted by this date to guarantee your funding.
  • Deadline for returning students: you guys get a little more breathing room. The deadline for continuing students is usually around the end of June 2026.

What about Wales, Scotland & Northern Ireland?

Applying from another part of the UK? The process is similar, but the dates and organisations are different. Make sure you're looking at the right website for your home country!

Your ultimate document checklist

Having these documents ready before you start the application will save you so much stress.

Information you'll need:

  • A valid UK passport (or your birth/adoption certificate)
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your university and course details
  • Your bank account details

Information your parents/guardians might need:

  • Their National Insurance numbers
  • Details of their income for the 2024/25 tax year (e.g. their P60)
  • Details of any other income from savings or investments

Top tips for a stress-free application

  1. Start early: don’t wait for the deadline. The system can get busy and crash.
  2. Talk to your parents: if you need their income details, have the chat early on.
  3. Apply, even if your place isn't confirmed: you can use your first-choice uni and course and simply change the details later if you go elsewhere.
