4 women who are smashing it right now

Today is International Women’s Day and all women around the globe are rallying together to support one and other. This year we have already celebrated a century of women’s votes in the UK... and now it's time to celebrate the achievements of every strong, powerful, badass woman who have graced the earth and turned ripples into waves.

The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #PressForChange. It is to remind women all over the world that although we have been making strides, we need to keep pushing the boundaries. Together.

We’ve seen female celebrities of all natures come together at a variety of red carpets events. Women have been pledging the #MeToo and Time’s Up movement to fight sexual harassment, discrimination and imbalance across all industries.

Here are 4 women who I think are causing waves right now:

1. Natalie Portman

The Time’s Up campaign helped Natalie look back on her time in the film industry highlighting that there were many times where she was subject to inappropriate advances. She has been a strong advocate for the campaign since it’s launch, alongside many other brave women in Hollywood who are fighting back. Natalie proved that she isn’t afraid to stir the pot at the Golden Globes... when she presented the Best Director award and quite rightly pointed out: 'And here are the all-male nominees'.

2. Stacey Dooley

If you didn't already know, Stacey Dooley is one of Britain’s best investigative journalists. She’s soaring onto her 11th BBC 3 series of Stacey Dooley Investigates... uncovering pressing issues around the world, including women’s hardship and denied rights. We’ve seen her courage and determination in her hard-hitting documentaries. Now she's gone on to publish her first book: On the Front Line with the Women Who Fight Back. She brings light to a number of issues women face by revisiting encounters with brave women living in extraordinary circumstances. This is a woman who won’t pipe down and she will continue to be a key driver of social change. What I love most about her is that she has remained true to herself and so her passion shines through. You go girl.

3. Kate Hudson

A woman doing it all! Acting, mothering, writing, body pumping - you name it Kate’s doing it. Kate is a Hollywood actress who has been in all of our favourite films. But she hasn’t let this define her life. Alongside acting and being a mum, she co-founded fitness wear brand Fabletics, which has grown out of her pro-active nature and love of wellness. She has also written two books sharing her secrets on how to fulfil a happy, fun lifestyle. Like Natalie, she is also an advocate for the Time’s Up campaign, putting her energy into the movement can only mean good things. If there is something we can agree on it’s that we could all do with some of Kate’s humble go-getter attitude!

4. Dua Lipa

After winning awards from NME, Glamour and MTV Europe for Best Breakthrough Act in 2017... everyone knew the only way Dua was heading was up. Last week she bagged a further Best Breakthrough Act award as well as Best Female Solo Act. Not only did she win but she broke a BRIT record, becoming the first female in BRIT history to be nominated for five awards! It’s fair to say that she’s causing a storm in the music industry - becoming an inspiration for all women who are chasing their dreams. With her self-titled debut album placing at number three in the charts this week, it looks like this girl is here to stay. Thank you, Dua, for teaching us self-love so we can all say IDGAF.

UNiDAYS believe in students - you're the future and you deserve a voice! But despite all the progress made for gender equality we know there's still a way to go, for example female graduates still earn less than their male counterparts. Not fair. Not cool. We want you to feel empowered like the absolute boss you are. Nominatea real-life Wonder Woman for Student Woman of the Year! Lets make HERSTORY!
