We know the high school movie classics of the 90s and early 00s like 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s All That, Clueless and Mean Girls, to name a few. But what about the recent movies that continue to ruin our expectations for what school should be like?
Yah, this is every movie (made after 2005) that made me question why my school experience was so boring and uneventful and why the seniors weren’t hot models that were secretly in love with me.
1. 21 Jump Street (2012)
The only real thing about this movie was the fact that they were confused with the high school stereotypes.
2. Adventureland (2009)
Ahh, Summer carnival love… if only.
3. Dope (2015)
Imagine casually riding your bike home past A$AP Rocky 😱
4. Easy A (2010)
2 words: Woodchuck Todd
5. Fame (2009)
Are performing arts schools actually like this!?
6. GBF (2013)
Okay, this one is more like a satire on the problematic way people view others (which still turned out pretty problematic) but we can’t help be drawn in by makeovers and Jojo.
7. High School Musical 2 (2007)
HSM2 was better than HSM1, idc, fight me. Yeah, Breaking Free was good but Gotta Go My Own Way is a heart-wrenching BOP. Also, it’s pretty realistic because Gabriella’s mum was waiting to pick her up at the end of the song.
8. John Tucker Must Die (2006)
Imagine being in a school where the popular girls don’t know the goss on who each of them are dating!
9. Juno (2007)
Doodle’s can’t be un-did, kids. Use protection. 🍆
10. Love, Simon (2018)
I want someone to wait for me on a Ferris wheel. 🎡
11. Me, Earl and the Dying Girl (2015)
Honestly wished me and my high school mates made funny little movies like these guys.
12. Paper Towns (2015)
Did someone say road trip to chase your high school crush across the country!?
13. Project X (2012)
If high school parties were actually like this, I wasn’t invited.
14. Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World (2010)
OK, not rly high school but Michael Cera is eternally 14 years old to me
15. Sierra Burgess is a Loser (2018)
THIS MOVIE WAS SO PROBLEMATIC but if Sierra Burgess can get Noah Centino after being a horrible person for the whole movie, I feel like I might have a chance at love.
16. Spiderman: Homecoming (2017)
Apart from wanting superpowers and having a popular person like you back and such, I always wondered what it was like to go to high school with Zendaya
17. Submarine (2010)
If only Alex Turner's sultry tones were the soundtrack to my 16-year-old life.
18. Superbad (2007)
This movie made me permanently worried about period stains and buying alcohol.
19. The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)
Everyone was way too old and stylish for high school. Plus, I’ve always wondered what it’d be like to cause havoc in the school corridors (although the Lizard was never part of it)
20. The Duff (2015)
I liked that the school went under internet marshall law when Bianca was cyberbullied, these issues need to be taken seriously!
21. The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
Probably one of the more believable high school movies in this list because Hailee Steinfeld killed it. But my teacher will never be as witty as Woody Harrelson.
22. The Fault in Our Stars (2014)
I’ve experienced high school love and heartbreak, and it was because of this movie… okay? Okay. 😭
23. The Kissing Booth (2018)
I feel like everyone who’s ever had a crush on their best friend’s brother was enabled because of this movie.
24. The Perks of Being a Wallflower (2012)
Why won’t two really cool kids take me under their wing and drive us through an underground tunnel while we yell out the sunroof??
25. To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018)
NOAH CENTINO. That’s the unrealistic expectation. Also, who knows all the addresses of their crushes? ... 👀
