Which big tech brand will be carbon negative by 2030?

At the end of last year, we asked some students from the University of Melbourne the following question: “In the case of two brands offering a similar product, what would influence your decision to shop with one brand over the other?”

“Clothing brands are now using models that aren’t your typical model body shape. It’s helpful to see clothing on someone like yourself,” one student replied.

Another added that she shops at Uniqlo over better-priced fast-fashion alternatives because the company aligns with her stance on sustainability.

Fashion is often at the forefront when you think of sustainability, authentic action, and shared values… but now it’s tech’s turn to stand up for what they believe in.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently said,"Each of us must commit to do more, in order for us to collectively achieve more.”

He was talking about the carbon problem facing the globe, which, if major companies and each of us individually don’t act, will result in extreme heatwaves, droughts, habitat and species loss, flooding, and heat-related deaths.

By 2030, Microsoft promises to be carbon negative. But that’s not all: by 2050, it says it will remove from the environment all the carbon it has emitted either directly or by electrical consumption since it was founded in 1975!

Obviously it’s nice to see such a huge commitment and leadership from Microsoft, but we’d also like to hear from you, too! DM us on social to let us know what you’re doing to help reduce your carbon footprint or what you’d like to see big businesses do.
