First date grooming tips for guys

We sat down with Bryan Tiska, Master Barber and Philips Shaving and Grooming ambassador to get the low down on his top shaving tips for a first date.

1. Clean up your facial hair

If you’re already sporting a beard, you’ll want your facial hair to look on-point. Clean-cut lines around the neck and cheekbones will ensure you look sophisticated and mature. For accuracy, consider using a precision trimmer like the Philips Beardtrimmer series 9000 so you can have accurate control of your line-up.

2. Moisture is the essence of wetness, and wetness is the essence of beauty.

It turns out Zoolander wasn’t mistaken in his mantra about moisture. Practice what he preaches. Moisturise your face daily – as well as any areas after you shave – as an important step in reducing irritation and dull skin. This daily routine will ensure you feel fresh.

3. Avoid greasy hair, but also fluffy hair

There is a fine line between not washing your hair for a couple of days and developing greasy hair, and washing the morning of a date and having hair that is too fluffy. You don’t want either. Wash your hair with shampoo the day before a date, and then avoid shampoo on the day of your date. Now you’ll avoid any uncontrollable frizzing.

4. Hold on the gel

Hold off on the crunchy or slick look! Avoid looking like you’ve tried too hard and only use the minimum amount needed to hold your hair in place – you’ll be more likely to get a second date.

Stubble and ‘stache

If you’re reluctant to get rid of that laidback summer ‘stache, it will still be easy to freshen your look with the Philips Beardtrimmer series 9000. Use the tool to neaten the edges of your moustache and any stubble along your neckline. Finish off with some trimming scissors to get any stray hairs.

Back to basics

For a fresh look, consider making an appointment with your barber and go for the clean shave as a surprise for your date. And clean-shaven doesn’t have to be boring; short and slim sideburns provide a great frame. Keep it modern, and make sure the length is no longer than the bottom of your ears.
