5 tips to take the perfect selfie

Get ready to rival Kylie Jenner with our top 5 tips for taking the perfect selfie.

1. Smile (or at least Smize!)

This is the first, and most important tip for taking the perfect selfie. If you're not into a full on smile, why not try a cheeky expression or do the old Tyra Banks favourite and smile with your eyes! 5322563_some-people-thing-squinching-is-the-key_be28214d_m Gif c/o superselected.com

2. Check out the background

This one is more important than you think! You don't want to be photobombed by an unsuspecting parent or worse - look like there's something sticking out of your head that shouldn't be. Plus your background can actually enhance your selfie more than you think - get your friends involved or head out into nature. It makes a great background and you get natural light as a bonus feature! Ellen-DeGeneres-Oscars-2014-Selfie-Video-02-2014-03-02-web Image c/o ecnmag.com

3. Lighting is everything!

Having a huge shadow cast over your face is really not going to enhance your natural gorgeous-ness, trust us. The best time to shoot your selfie is in low natural light such as sunrise or sunset - think of this as the 'Golden Hour of Selfies!'. Can't get outside at these times? Try beauty blogger Michelle Phan's trick of heading to a window and holding a piece of white paper under your chin. This creates a bounce of natural light, illuminates the face and reduces the risk of a double chin!

4. Find your good side

Kim Kardashian (Queen of Selfies!) has said that she always keeps her chin down in her snaps. She then went on to say that she takes about 300 photos before she decides on one though, so we're not sure how much advice to really take from her! If your phone is tilted at 45 degrees and held just above your eye-line you should get rid of all under-eye circles and double chins. 5. Filter it!

Take advantage of the fact that Instagram has a whole load of filters to make your already great image even more amazing. Don't be scared of the new filters - Slumber can make you look a little bit more tanned and Crema floods the image with light, similar to Valencia! Plus you can download 101 apps to help you edit your photos even more. Not into full on face selfies? Try the full-length mirror shot to show off a new outfit or your recent gym gains! With these, you need to make sure that your mirror is clean and there's nothing worse than having clutter in the background - so try to keep it tidy. Fancy showing off your new shoes in a shoe-selfie? Aim your phone straight down your legs with the frame starting on your thighs - this makes your legs look as long as possible!
