5 Quick Tips to Become a Better Writer

Aisha Horrobin, one of our amazing guest writers, shares her top tips on how you can become a better writer. And it doesn't involve taking a course! Whether you want to write stories, blog posts or just want some extra help with writing compelling essays, there are a few handy tips to excel as a writer.

1. Read!

As Stephen King said, ‘If you don’t have time to read, you don’t have the time (or the tools) to write.' Reading is the best way to find inspiration and learn through a writer’s eye. You’ll find out what you like and what you don’t like, what works and what doesn’t.

2. Don’t be afraid of criticism

Nobody wants to hear that their work sucks but getting a friend or classmate to read through your writing can be one of the best ways to help you! An outsider’s perspective can do wonders and give you the tools to take your writing to the next level.

3. Write what you know

You’ve probably heard this one a billion times, but using your own knowledge and experience is a great tool to bring your writing to life.

4. Experiment

In contrast to writing what you know, don’t be afraid to leave your comfort zone. Experiment with techniques and ideas or take a new approach. Something amazing could happen!

5. Write everyday

Even if it’s just one sentence before going to bed, get into a routine of writing. Whether it’s in your notes or something more structured, the more you write, the better you’ll get.
