1. Create bulletproof passwords

Use strong and unique passwords. The more secure the password, the more difficult it is for hackers to infect your system with malware and/or steal your personal data. It’s tempting to default to simple passwords to take out the hassle of remembering the amount of accounts we have. Resist temptation and use a password manager instead. Some tips:

  • Don’t share your passwords with people and don’t write them down;
  • Use password managers or encryption services to keep them extra secure. They’re easy to use and there’s loads available to choose from;
  • Use different passwords for different sites. Choosing a longer password, such as four random words or a sentence is generally stronger than a shorter password that replaces letters with special characters (and easier to remember).
  • Update your passwords regularly

2. Keep software up to date

Developers of apps and websites are constantly on the look out for improvements to their security systems. This is why when they see a security gap, they will make a new update. It’s essential to keep updating every time there is something new so to avoid being caught in the gap and avoid hackers to getting.

3. Be aware of your digital footprint

Every time you go online you leave a digital footprint which shows others where you are and what you have been doing. Location data may make it easier for people to know when you’re away from home, making your things a target for burglars. It’s also great to post photos to share with friends, but remember that once a photo or video is online it’s really hard to get down - don’t post anything you will regret your grandma seeing!

4. Customise privacy settings

The default settings of many websites (particularly social media platforms) may leave your personal life more exposed than you might like. Avoid this by being mindful of your privacy settings, create customised profiles to suit your needs and reduce the risk of a data breach by only entering essential information that the service requires to function.

5. Be careful when online shopping

Use a method like PayPal or a credit card when shopping online. This way you get buyer protection and won’t be held liable for fraudulent charges. Make sure you are using a secure website as well - one with https in the URL.

6. Using emails safely

Avoid opening email attachments received unexpectedly, no matter who appears to have sent it. A good thing to do is check the sender’s email rather than the name that appears at first. Be careful if you are sent links especially asking for personal data - your bank will never contact you over email to verify anything. Log in through the website as you would normally rather than clicking the link or even call them.

7. Always have anti-virus/malware

This will give you a basic level of protection, as well as ad-blockers against anything which may crop up and make your private data available.
