5 mistakes to avoid when it comes to trainer fashion

Trainers are something of an essential so it’s not that often we think about the impact they can have on our outfit's finished look.

If you’re guilty of just slipping on the same old pair of kicks no matter the occasion then you might be guilty of these mistakes, but I’m here to help you fix up your trainer game!

1. Not finding the trend for you

It’s easy to get caught up in the latest trends but wearing something you’re not really comfortable in is a sure fire way to make yourself look and feel awkward.

There’s currently a big focus on ‘dad’ trainers and the ‘ugly’ trend but if this isn’t for you then that’s cool, instead, focus on more classic styles such as Converse 1970s and Nike Air Max.

The benefit of not following trends is that you’ll get much more wear and lifetime out of those expensive kicks.

2. Wearing the wrong trainers in the gym

Your gym trainers might be the last thing on your mind when thinking about your next sesh but depending on the type of training you’re doing they can have a big impact.

If you’re more into weight lifting and performing movements such as squats and deadlifts, you want to opt for something with a nice solid base and minimal cushioning. Alternatively, if you’re more a cardio kinda guy then a classic runner will benefit your feet when putting in the miles.

3. Not keeping them clean

Wearing tired and dirty trainers is a guaranteed way to throw out some lazy vibes. Keeping your trainers clean needn’t be a military operation but taking simple steps to keeping your trainers fresh will make all the difference.

If you’re wearing canvas kicks, opt for a low heat, nice and slow spin cycle, popping the trainers in a pillowcase to protect the details. If you wear suede or nubuck then a little hand cleaning will need to be done using a specialist kit such as this Jason Markk essentials pack.

4. Not saying goodbye when the time’s right

Following on from not keeping your trainers clean, sometimes there’s just nothing you can do to revive them and that’s when you need to say goodbye.

If you find the leather starting to peel or crack or the sole on your vans is beginning to come away, there’s no way of repairing those kinds of issues and a new pair is definitely on the cards.

If you’re not ready to say goodbye completely, why not replace them with the same trainers, no one ever said there’s a problem with having a trusty, go-to style!

5. Not pairing the right trainers with the right outfit

This tip is all about pairing the right trainers with the right clothes to nail your signature, confident style we mentioned earlier!

If you’re a smart casual kinda guy then opting for a minimal, clean pair of trainers such as Stan Smiths is ideal for pairing with jeans or trousers for a slightly more formal look. If you prefer a more street style, you can go for an athletic runner look, paired with the perfect joggers or oversized trousers for a super casj workwear vibe.
