5 questions we have after Avengers: Infinity War

Now that the opening weekend has passed and everyone’s had a chance to watch Avengers: Infinity War, now is perfect time to discuss what the hell just happened.

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD

The film left us all in shock and with just as many questions as answers - let’s take a look at 5 of the major questions audiences were left with after Infinity War.

1. Why did Dr Strange give Thanos the time stone?

It pretty much shocked everyone when Stephen Strange did exactly what he said he wouldn’t do and traded the time stone with Thanos in exchange for Tony Stark’s life. Why would he do that? Why the sudden change of heart? Why was he helping Thanos destroy the universe?!

Well, earlier in the movie, Dr Strange used the time stone to visit 14,000,601 possible versions of the future so that he could see all the potential outcomes of the coming battle. Turns out there was only 1 where the heroes came out on top.

As a result, Strange is the only being in the universe who knows exactly what must happen in order to defeat Thanos. Therefore Strange’s change of heart must be because he knows Tony plays a crucial role in the version of the future where they defeat Thanos.

Perhaps thats why Strange said to Tony ‘it was the only way’ before he disappeared…

2. How does Thanos know who Tony Stark is?

So not only is Tony possibly the key to ensuring the heroes achieve the 1 in 14 million outcome but somehow Thanos knows him. When Thanos encounters Tony on Titan, he calls him by his name. Tony was noticeably shocked, asking ‘you know me?’ to which Thanos replied, ‘Of course. You’re not the only one cursed with knowledge’.

What does Thanos know about Tony? Why does Thanos care who he is? Thanos even goes as far as to saying he admires Stark.

However, in the end, he does spare his life in exchange for the time stone - so while Thanos may be aware of the threat Tony poses to him, it’s pretty clear Thanos is willing to take the pretty safe 1 in 14 million bet that he won’t be able to stop him.

3. What were the significance of Thanos’ visions and the Soul Stone?

After sacrificing Gamora and after destroying 50% of all life in the universe by clicking his fingers, Thanos entered a weird realm.

The first time, Thanos awakened, submerged in water to find the soul stone in his hand. The second time, Thanos was met by a young Gamora, who asked:
Gamora: Did you do it?
Thanos: Yes
Gamora: What did it cost you?
Thanos: Everything

Although it’s pretty hard to tell, these visions most likely have something to do with the Soul Stone.

It’s unclear what powers the stone has as this is the first time we’ve seen it in the MCU but Red Skull did warn Thanos that the stone had a price.

Perhaps the soul stone still requires more from Thanos? Maybe Gamora’s soul was stored in the stone after her sacrifice, hence the visions? Does that mean all the heroes who were wiped out at the end of Thanos’ universal sacrifice are also located in the soul stone?

What happens now?

Are all those heroes really dead? Spider-Man? Black Panther? Star Lord?

The directors, The Russo Brothers, did say that characters will die in IW and they will die for real. No revives.

But does that mean ALL the characters that died, will stay dead? Surely not the 3 characters I just mentioned? They all have confirmed sequels coming up?

It could be that the heroes are dead and the sequels for these characters are set before the events of Infinity War.

Ant Man and The Wasp, is due out in the summer and it’s confirmed that it will be set post Civil War and pre Infinity War. Plus Captain Marvel is coming out and that has been confirmed to be set in the 1990s.

But surely not… they’ve gotta come back? Right?

But didn’t Thanos destroy/severely damage the gauntlet and the stones when he snapped his fingers? Would they even work any more?

One thing that’s interesting to note is that all the founding members of the Avengers survived - Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Hulk and Black Widow all made it (presumably this means Hawkeye is alive somewhere!)

Maybe it’s time to assemble one last time with the help of Okoye, Mbaku, War Machine, Rocket, Nebula and Shuri.

Why did Nick Fury wait to call in Captain Marvel?

The post-credit scene of Infinity War saw Nick Fury send a distress signal to none other than Captain Marvel before disintegrating.

But who is Captain Marvel? Why is she so important?

Captain Marvel, AKA Carol Danvers, is a female US Air Force pilot who rose to the ranks of officer by challenging the gender stereotyping of the military. She accidentally got caught in an explosion involving a Kree superhero and her DNA fused with his and she became one of the most powerful heroes in Marvel comics. She even went on to lead the Avengers for a while.

So it’s no surprise that Nick Fury has decided to call in the big guns for this one, but why did he wait so long?

Given that the Captain Marvel movie (due to released March 2019) is set in the 1990s, it’s pretty safe to assume that Nick Fury has known Captain Marvel for decades. However, the reason for the delay may be because Nick Fury wasn’t fully aware of the threat the Avengers were facing until he saw Maria Hill disappear in front him.

But what role is Captain Marvel going to play in Avengers 4? The Russos confirmed that whatever it is, it’s going to be big.

Some other smaller questions!

As always with films in the MCU, some story arcs are left hanging but are always followed up on in later films. Some of these in Infinity War are:

  • Will Bruce Banner and the Hulk resolve their differences?
  • How will Steve cope with the loss of Bucky?

  • Will Steve and Tony finally reunite?
  • Will Bruce and Nat discuss his disappearance?
  • How will Tony cope with losing Peter?
  • Wakanda is without a King - who will lead the nation in his absence?
  • How will Rocket cope with the loss of his entire family?
  • Is Pepper actually pregnant?
  • Where is this strange mountain that Thanos seems to be chilling on?

…guess we’ll just have to wait until May 2019 for answers.
