It’s great to see that we’re seeing more and more diversity on TV! Check out these shows that are doing a great job when it comes to representing people of colour.
1. Jane the Virgin
This hilarious comedy based around young Latina virgin, Jane (of course), who accidentally gets pregnant after being artificially inseminated. The show’s star, Gina Rodriguez, has been nominated for 3 Golden Globes for her work on the show!
This show follows a group of strangers who become linked mentally. It was praised for its diverse cast and ability to touch on issues such as religion, race, class, homophobia and poverty. When the show was not renewed for a third season, a petition was started and it is now returning for a two-hour finale episode.
3. Grey’s Anatomy
An oldie but a goodie. This was one of the first shows around to have a diverse cast and really get it right! The best thing is if you haven’t watched this yet, there are 14 beautiful seasons to get through and you’ll never look back!
4. Luke Cage
This marvel hero has unbreakable skin and superhuman strength. The show was praised for being socially conscious and it’s outstanding soundtrack. You can also catch Luke in cross-over TV show The Defenders.
5. The Night Of
Riz Ahmed plays Pakistani-American college student accused of murdering a girl on the Upper East Side of New York in this eight-part crime drama. This show had huge critical acclaim so definitely one for the watchlist.
The very very talented Donald Glover created and stars in this comedy-drama all about one man’s life in Atlanta (hence the title.) It includes elements of surrealism and wacky comedy, whilst tackling issues of race and class.
