April 6th sees the UK release of Love, Simon. A romantic-comedy drama film directed by Greg Berlanti. In anticipation of this, here are 5 reasons we are excited for its release next month.

1.It's not your average rom-com

Love, Simon brings its audiences a rom-com that isn’t your standard model of boy meets girl (or boy, in this case) they fall hopelessly in love until tragedy strikes or they fall out, with the pair just making up in time for the film to end and them living happily ever after. Love, Simon has its protagonist search for what his own idea of romance and love is, having never experienced it before, an interesting take on a familiar genre.

2.Its message

Love Simon’s main character, Simon Spier, must navigate being gay in an often cruel and ignorant school environment. Not only this, he must approach the issue of letting his family know. The film's message is a very important one, highlighting issues faced by many thousands of teens across the world today.

3.The production team and director

The film’s production team includes Wyck Godfrey, who has a very impressive CV, being a mainstay in films like I, Robot, The Twilight series and the Maze Runner series. Its director, Greg Berlanti, not only has an impressive resume as well, he is also one of the highest profile gay directors currently working on top films. This will no doubt aid the film, adding a personal touch to the aesthetic and direction of the film.

4.An exciting cast

The casting director has done a great job assembling a roster including some stable and established names alongside very promising young talent. Jenifer Garner, as Emily Spier, Simon’s mother, always provides strong performances. Katherine Langford, as Simon’s best friend Leah Burke, has risen quickly in people’s estimations after her performance in Netflix series 13 Reasons Why. Not To forget the main man, Nick Robinson, who I really enjoy in The 5th Wave and really is impressing at the age of only 22.

5.It’s adapted from an impressive and popular novel

A lot of the time, if you just let a bunch of Hollywood writers sit in a room and write a story and script from scratch, it can often lose focus due to all the different voices going into writing it. Ultimately this negatively impacts the films produced. Love, Simon, is adapted from the bestselling young adult novel, Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli. A really fun to read piece, it strengthens the film outright, giving the director and producers a high-quality storyline to work with, which is only to the benefit of the film.
