You’ve finally secured your placement and can breathe a sigh of relieve as you leave the stress of applications and interviews behind; until you remember that you actually have to do the placement. Whether you’re working for one year or one month, here are five things you need to be prepared for before starting your placement so you can make the most out of it!

1. Research is key

Whatever your placement entails, understanding the company and the role that you will be expected to fill will help put you one step ahead when it comes to first-day nerves. Whilst you should know roughly what is expected from you, knowing your responsibilities from the job description and other reviews of your placement will help prepare you for the job and come with new ideas to share.

2. Be prepared for a new routine

Every job is different, but most placements require long working hours that you’re probably not used to. Whilst it’s hard to fully prepare for a new routine, be aware of the changes to your sleep schedule and enjoy the lie ins you have at University whilst you have them. It’s all about to change…

3. Use your initiative

Don’t just wait around for your placement to start! Reach out to your manager and members of your team asking if there is any research or pre-work that would be beneficial for before you start. It may sound like a bit of extra work on top of everything else, but it will help get you ahead and give a good impression.

4. Dress to impress

A new job means one thing…new outfits! Don’t be afraid to get excited for the role by preparing your new wardrobe. Depending on your placement you may have different workwear expectations, so be sure to do your research so you have some looks ready to go for the big day.

5. Know your objectives

Think of some of the skills you want to gain whilst on your placement. Majority of teams will be happy to help you gain experience in certain areas in order to help you make the most of your placement, so coming in with a list of goals will certainly help when it comes to building your CV. Taking a placement during University is a great opportunity to gain real experience in your industry, so don’t take it for granted.

Starting your placement can be daunting, but don’t forget you’re there to learn! Use your initiative and ask questions. Be sure to get the most out it, because the best experience you can get is by doing!
