Put the store-bought batter mix away and save that lemon for your herbal teas; there’s no room for mediocre pancakes around here, as DesignMyNight have lined up the 10 best places in the UK to make this Pancake Day the sweetest yet.
Gas Street social in Birmingham has a brunch menu to make your eyes water, with a perfectly crafted, stonking set of pancake dishes on the roster. All promising a fluffy bed of buttermilk pancakes, each with their own topping, you can indulge in everything from berries and Cornish clotted cream, to Canadian maple syrup.
This quant brasserie always makes sure that its rustic charm is represented in its dishes, and the breakfast menu is of no exception. Their Berry Buttermilk Pancakes are topped with a decadent dollop of English borage honey and Greek yoghurt to balance the sweetness, while the classic bacon and syrup combo is upgraded by replacing the bacon with pancetta, while crunch is added in the shape of savoury granola.
Banyan is pulling out all the stops with their American-style pancakes, and you can go one step further by pairing it with one of their brunch cocktails for the ultimate midday treat. Copious amounts of rich blueberry compote, crème fraîche and maple syrup spill from between each layer of delightfully soft pancake; a fresh and fruity gift from our friends overseas. They’ve also brought out an exclusive Pancake Day menu; each dish stars two American pancakes with cream, and are crowned with some killer flavour combinations, such as Nutella and banana, and blueberries with maple syrup.
Eat like a king at Brighton’s The Breakfast Club and try the unusually epic pancake dishes from their breakfast menu, available until 12pm. You’ll be spoilt for choice as they offer up every flavour you can imagine, from banoffee and salted caramel to a Willy Wonka-inspired berry and lemon creation. They’ve also thrown in a meaty special for Pancake Day, putting their spin on the much-loved, humble burger and switching out buns for pancakes in a genius, savoury masterpiece.
The Diner are getting creative… and a bit flippin’ crazy with their toppings this year. The sugar-fueled madness at The Diner’s Pancake Day celebrations begin with a vegan-friendly mint chocolate chip flavoured bright green stack, perfect for the ‘gram. Not sure about green pancakes? The Boozy Black Forest Pancake with Creme De Cassis and cherry compote will delight, almost as much as their s'mores-inspired creation with chocolate and marshmallows.
This modern gastropub in Sloane Square is introducing a classy collection of ricotta pancakes with floral infusions this Pancake Day. One of the inventive creations not only features poached rhubarb and orange creme fraiche, lavender caramel gives the stack a sharp and sweet contrast. There are also savoury stacks to sink your teeth into, including the Kimchi Pancakes with smoked salmon and basil mayo.
The Riding House Cafe in Fitzrovia is another venue breaking out the buttermilk batter for their breakfast menu. Their luxuriously thick American-style pancakes are lathered in a winning combination of clotted cream and maple syrup, only to be topped off with a heaped mound of fresh whole berries and a jammy berry sauce. You may have trouble deciding on a dish after reading the second pancake option on the menu, as diners will be lured in by the promise of triple-smoked streaky bacon covered in maple syrup.
Find a better pairing than pancakes and prosecco… we’ll wait. At Duo in Camden, every weekend is Pancake Day with their glorious bottomless brunch. See how many sweet and savoury stacks you can get down in two hours as you make your way through their diverse range of toppings. You’ll feel like a celebrity as you swim in a sea of bottomless bubbly and batter, all the while singing along to the best diva anthems their resident DJ has to offer.
Little Blue Door in Fulham has created a monstrous tribute to all things sweet. You’ll be mesmerised as you behold the mountain of toppings cascading down this 25-pancake-tall vision of beauty. This gravity-defying construction requires the best engineers and architects in the business, and you and four friends can destroy it for just £10 each.
Does The Breakfast Club sound familiar? That’s because it’s so good we had to mention it twice. Enter pancake heaven and feast your eyes on this epic take on a classic American sandwich; that’s right folks, they’re merging PB&J with the pancake world, and our sweet tooth is forever in their debt.
