I went with Jake, one of our awesome Front End Developers to experience the Topman Personal Shopping Suite at the Oxford Street store in London. Well, we had to test it out for you guys! I asked Jake some questions so you can get a feel for what the experience would be like.
Allie: What were you expecting from the Personal Shopping experience?A know-it-all fashion guru to order me around, tell me off for my bad taste in clothes and get me to wear something ridiculous but it's nowhere near as strange as I thought it was going to be! All the stylists there are super friendly.
Allie: How would you describe your style before the PS experience?Safe, reserved and extremely picky. Also a big fan of burgundy (the colour, not the news anchor). I actually bought this Burgundy & Rust Twist Crew Neck Jumper after being styled in it on the day.
Allie: What was the best bit of the experience?Having someone fashion savvy to run around and find combinations to match your style. And the free beer.
Allie: Did you have a favourite piece that the personal shoppers have picked out for you? This Wood Wood Dark Blue Denim Shirt was a winner, I bought it!
Allie: Do you think you’ll switch up your style/take anything from the PS experience?
I doubt my style will change drastically, but I will definitely think outside of the box a little when it comes to picking different combinations. I never thought double denim was OK but now I'd try it out for sure.
We then had a quick fire chat with Janel, the lovely stylist that was working with us on Jake's looks to get a little insight into her job as a Topman personal shopper!
Allie: Tell us how the Topman Personal Shopping Suite works!Janel: It's a completely free service and we have a couple of options! The first is a half an hour express appointment which is really quick and is usually just about styling some new pieces or choosing a particular item like a pair of boots. The next option is slightly longer and is usually creating a small 'edit' for a guys' wardrobe, this usually includes suiting and 2-3 outfits full of pieces he can interchange and wear all together. The final option is a longer appointment and can be a seasonal or full wardrobe refresh. Some guys only come in 3-4 times a year but they'll buy their complete summer or autumn wardrobe in one go!
Allie: What are the key items every guy should have in his wardrobe?Janel: Every guy should own a denim shirt, a classic white Oxford shirt, a great fitting white t-shirt, a denim jacket, a fab pair of jeans and classic trainers like Converse.
Allie: What's your favourite part of your job?Janel: Styling people in outfits they would never pick out themselves is really great, especially when they turn out to really like and feel comfortable in the look. I love styling VIP for the red carpet and I also get to style up the Instagram shots for the main Topman Instagram which is a really cool part of the job!
Allie: Who's the most famous person you've styled?Tom Daley for the GQ Awards was pretty cool and we've had Dougie from McFly in a few times too. Don't forget, you could be in with the chance of winning a personal shopping experience at Topman in London or Brighton with a budget of £300 to spend on clothes too.
