Student SIM-Only Deals: Data Guide

Student SIM-only deals: how much data do you actually need?

Your phone bill is probably one of those things you set up once and never looked at again. That means there’s a decent chance you’re paying more than you need to, especially if you’re on a contract you chose before you knew what you used each month.

Here’s what to cast an eye over before you switch, how to figure out your actual data usage, and where the best student SIM-only deals are.

SIM-only vs phone contract—what’s the difference?

A phone contract bundles your handset and monthly plan together. You’re paying off the phone over 24 months (usually) and paying for data on top. If you’ve already got a phone you’re happy with—or you’ve finished paying one off—a SIM-only deal is typically cheaper.

SIM-only means you’re only paying for the data, calls, and texts. No handset, no 24-month lock-in, and no paying over the odds for a phone you could buy outright for less.

How much data do you need?

This is the question everyone answers wrong. They either guess too low and run out, or convince themselves they need unlimited when they really don’t.

A rough guide based on how you actually use your phone:

  • Light use: mostly on campus WiFi, occasional browsing and social media: 5–15GB per month
  • Average use: social media, streaming, Maps, WhatsApp video: 20–50GB per month
  • Heavy use: regular streaming, music, video calls away from WiFi: 50–100GB per month
  • Unlimited: only makes genuine sense if you’re regularly tethering your laptop to your phone as a hotspot. If you have home broadband, unlimited is probably overkill

Most students who think they need unlimited data don’t. 100GB covers the vast majority of people comfortably. It also costs less than unlimited almost everywhere. Check your current usage in your phone’s settings before you pick a plan. Most people are surprised by how little they actually use.

Contract length: rolling vs 12-month vs 24-month

This is where student SIM-only deals get intriguing, and the tradeoff is real.

30-day rolling

Maximum flexibility, switch whenever you want, no exit fees. It’s usually a bit more expensive per month, but the freedom to leave when a better deal comes along is worth paying for. Good if your usage changes a lot between term time and holidays, or if you want to switch when promotions drop.

12-month

The sweet spot for most students. Better monthly rates than rolling, and the length roughly matches a tenancy or an academic year. There’s also no credit check required by most firms.

24-month

Cheapest monthly rate but the longest commitment. It’s fine if you’re confident about your usage and want to set it and forget it. Check the annual price rise clause — some plans include a fixed £1.25 annual price rise each April, which adds up over time.

Big network vs budget network

The four main UK networks are EE, O2, Three, and Vodafone. All four currently run student discounts. EE gives students 20% off the monthly airtime on SIM-only plans, and Three offers 20% off across 1-, 12-, and 24-month terms. O2 students also get Priority perks including gig ticket access and 2-for-1 cinema deals.

Student discount prices from the big networks can be more than what budget networks charge everyone by default. Smaller networks that run on the same infrastructure as the big four are worth comparing before you commit to a big-name deal.

A few worth knowing about:

  • VOXI (runs on Vodafone) - rolling monthly plans, unlimited social media data on all plans. Currently from £10/month with a promotional data boost running until September 2026.
  • Giffgaff (runs on O2) - 30-day plans from £10/month, no credit check, no contract. Popular with students for exactly those reasons.
  • SMARTY (runs on Three) - data you don’t use gets credited back to your next bill. Genuinely useful if your usage varies month to month.
  • Lebara - solid for international students, with most plans including EU roaming and some extending to India and China.

The hidden costs to check before committing

The monthly price isn’t always the full picture, so check the below:

  • Annual price rises: most major networks now raise prices each April. Check whether the increase is capped at a fixed amount or tied to inflation.
  • Roaming charges: if you’re going abroad, check whether your plan includes EU roaming as standard or whether it’s an add-on.
  • Out-of-bundle costs: if you go over your data allowance, some plans charge per MB at eye-watering rates. Others slow your speed.
  • Credit checks: 12- and 24-month contracts usually require one. Rolling plans and some budget networks don’t.
