Met Gala 2017: The good and bad

You can always count on the Met Gala to bring out all the celebs craziest and most daring outfits you’ve ever seen, and this year, it didn’t disappoint!

The exclusive Met Gala event is a charity ball held annually at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, with tickets costing tens of thousands of dollars to raise money for the museum's fashion department, the Costume Institute.

The event is also the launch party for the Met’s latest exhibition, which this year focuses on Rei Kawakubo, founder of fashion house Commes Des Garcons, known for sculptural clothes that blur gender divides. If you’re rich enough to be able to afford a ticket, you’re encouraged to dress according to the new exhibition theme - cue all the weird and wonderful gowns!

The good

Selena Gomez

Making her red carpet debut alongside bae, The Weeknd, Selena Gomez kept things simple and elegant in a floor-length dress featuring vintage lace panelling and hand-sewn floral embroidery. Subtle and summery, I like it.

Blake Lively

Mega babe Blake Lively looked like a gorgeous goddess in a plunging golden gown. The beautiful Versace gown featured a blue feathered train which trailed behind her elegantly, with matching blue earrings and ring. Definitely my fave look of the night as Blake manages to nail the exhibition theme without going too over the top. Yes, Katy Perry, I’m talking about you.

It’s a yes from me, Blake.

The bad

Cara Delevingne

Cara swapped her newly shaved head for a sprayed on silver pixie crop, pushing red carpet standards to the next level. Wearing a patterned Chanel two piece, I can’t help but think this outfit would kind of looked ok if it wasn’t for the extreme haircut... I guess that’s what the Met Gala is all about. 10/10 for effort Cara! Mixing X-Men, alien and robot style with some festival season body glitter… I’m all for a bit of glitter.

Solange Knowles

Solange was wearing what can only be described as a sleeping bag, surely? Making a statement in a Thom Browne parka dress it’s quite the opposite from what you would usually expect to see on a glamorous red carpet in New York City.

Jaden Smith

So Jaden Smith accessorised his pretty plain Met Gala look by carrying his recently cut off dreadlocks. Erm, you ok hun?

The see-through

Kylie Jenner

You can always count on the Kardashian/Jenner family to don the barely there dresses, and to no surprise, they didn’t disappoint. Kylie arrived in a short platinum bob and Versace mesh dress embellished with jewels and beads.

Kendall Jenner

Side split, backless, sheer and slashed across the front. There really wasn’t much else to this dress.

The weird and wonderful

You can always count on these two gals to take things to the extreme:

Rihanna

Queen of the Met Gala, Rihanna nailed the theme in a 3D Comme des Garçons dress, completing her look with a top knot, matching eye shadow and thigh-high heels.

Katy Perry

Pop diva Katy Perry arrived in a red tulle and chiffon dress with extravagant headpiece and veil, talk about being extra. It’s a no from me.
