Armchair travel: 5 podcasts that will transport you around the world

Podcasts are a great way to pass the time while you’re in lockdown and can be completely immersive in a way that other mediums just aren’t.

So give your eyes a rest from your phone, strap on a pair of headphones, and grab yourself a cup of tea. Then close your eyes and prepare to be transported around the world to the dulcet tones of these excellent hosts.

The Travel Diaries

This interview based podcast explores the lives and stories of a diverse range of celebrities within the context of travel. Host Holly Rubenstein uncovers how travel has shaped their lives with a series of questions broken down into eight “chapters”, with each one covering a different topic or experience.

They include things like earliest travel memory, bucket list destination, and first place they fell in love with. Well known names to have made an appearance include platinum selling singers like Ella Eyre, Michelin star chefs such as Tom Kerridge, and Hollywood superstars including Dev Patel, as well as straight up adventurers from Sir Ranulph Fiennes to Levison Wood.

Women Who Travel

Condé Nast’s awesome Women Who Travel podcast’s title sums it up pretty well. An extension of the website’s written section of the same name, it’s a fun and informative focus on all things female travel.

From top tips and safety advice, to celebrating women making waves in the travel industry, it’s not just aimed at women. In fact their tag line is “By women, for everyone.” and that’s certainly true.

Vansformation

Ok so this is a bit niche, but if the idea of #vanlife is something that has ever captured even a corner of your imagination then the Vansformation podcast is definitely worth a listen. Host Feta Brown walks listeners through how to do a conversion, starting from a collection of Pinterest boards right through to sitting in a shiny self-built camper van.

But even if you’re not interested in living in a house on wheels yourself, you can still get plenty from this show. There are informative interviews with camper van companies talking about building businesses, tips on saving money, and advice on goal setting that can be applied to any walk of life.

Kinging It

Travel vloggers Craig and Aimee have stretched their creative wings by branching out from YouTube to create this podcast. Whether you follow their videos or not, this podcast is fantastically engaging and gives a deeper insight into their lifestyle.

Series one addresses the basics of travel from how to save money for your first trip through to how you can make money online to keep you on the road for longer. Series 2 is more narrative based and tells the tale of their epic two month trip across India in a rickshaw. Expect lots of laughs and behind the scenes side-splitting stories that didn’t make it into the vlogs.

On She Goes

Host Aminatou Sow is the curator of this fantastic podcast aimed specifically at women of colour. Each week she convenes a group of like minded ladies to discuss travel from their perspective.

Exploring topics which include everything from ancestry, food, adventure travel, and the great outdoors through the lens of a woman of colour, it’s an essential listen for anyone to get an understanding of the unique issues that face them.
