How to stay safe during freshers

Freshers, known to some as the best time of their uni life. Nights out every evening, meeting new people, fun club events, freshers fair, living in a new city- it can all get quite overwhelming.

Here are a few pointers to help you stay safe during your freshers experience.

1. Always keep cash on you

I know, I know, you’re probably thinking, cash? It’s the 21st century, who keeps cash on them nowadays. But, when you’re stranded after a night out in the new city that you’ve moved to and you need to get a taxi back and you don’t know where the closest cashpoint is… then yes, cash would be pretty necessary.

2. Make sufficient going out friends

No, I’m not saying it’s a competition, but it’s always a good idea to go out in a big group, stay out in a big group and come home in a big group.

You don’t need to be besties with these people, but remember that everyone is in the same boat when it comes to uni, everyone is trying to make new friends. These people are essentially going to be your uni family.

3. Use protection

I’m sure your parents or someone back home has given you the ‘talk’ about the birds and the bees. But on a serious note, some people go a bit cray cray at uni, especially during their first few weeks and that’s fine, but be safe and use protection, whether it be a condom, go on the pill or any other form on contraception.

Remember, condoms aren’t only to eliminate the chance of an early bundle of joy, it also helps keep out those not so joyous STD’s.

4. Keep emergency money

Go out, have fun, explore your new city, but keep emergency money aside for when you need last minute groceries, transport money or maybe some spare change for your laundry that’s been piling up because you thought you were going to go home every weekend and get your Mum to wash it.

It’s always a good idea.

5. Stay with people when you’re on a night out

In this situation, 2 is not a crowd and 3 is definitely a party- that’s a good thing. Staying with people while you’re in a new environment helps keep all of you safe and together. Steer away from being alone.
