4 up and coming city break destinations you need to know about

Not to curse the weather or anything but now that we are getting a bit more sunshine it's safe to say I am feeling inspired. There are so many cool destinations to travel to so I thought I'd check out some up and coming city breaks!

1. Glasgow, Scotland

Glasgow is the culture hub of Scotland and has been voted European City of Culture in 1990 and is still constantly adapting. Over the past few months some really awesome new restaurants and bars have opened. Including ‘Super Bario’ an arcade bar with over 54 beers from around the world and free arcade machines and ‘The Drugstore Social’ where you can purchase your ‘prescription cocktails’!

Take a wander through Ashton Lane and Kelvinside and there is no doubt you will come across some incredibly unique foodie places. Glasgow is known as the UK’s most vegan-friendly city making it even easier to find somewhere great to eat. Why not take part in some of Glasgow’s incredible culture? Let it tickle your funny bone at ‘The Stand Comedy Club’ with at least 1 gig happening every day.

Oh and don’t forget Glasgow’s incredible architecture. Victorian buildings and tobacco warehouses have become a part of Merchant City with designer boutiques, art galleries and museums. Many of these are free to visit so you can really immerse yourself without worrying about the entrance fees. You can't leave Glasgow without experiencing a bit of Charles Rennie Mackintosh the famous Glaswegian architect whose work has featured in films such as Inception and Dr. Who.

Go on why not give Glasgow a wee bit of a chance, it has fantastic transport connections by both rail and by air. You will definitely not struggle to find accommodation, as it is home to the well-known hotel chains including citizenM Glasgow with their XL beds and mood lighting.

2. Copenhagen, Denmark

Definitely, one of the top destinations for me to visit in the next year is Copenhagen. The capital of Denmark is eye-catching and is definitely capturing my attention. You can even sail in a Viking boat (it’s only a 30-minute train ride away from Copenhagen in Roskilde)...now that sounds pretty cool. Copenhagen just strikes me as one of the trendiest places around and is an absolute goldmine for those wonderful #nofilter Instagram pictures as it's absolutely stunning. Some of the places you need to visit include: Superkilen Park, Nyhavn and so many more it is actually hard to list them all!

You should definitely check out the brand new Verdenshjørnet, which is a new event space with foodie trucks representing food from all over the world. You could even cosy up in the Tipi Bar, it makes you feel like you are at a festival like Glastonbury right in the heart of Copenhagen (minus the mud) just off Nørrebro Street. Nørrebro Street if one of the hottest areas in Copenhagen with a buzzing atmosphere full of cafés and mouth-watering restaurants including Nordic and Thai Cuisine.

Copenhagen has their own ‘Copenhagen Card’ which gives you free admission to 73 museums & attractions and free public transport by bus, train and metro. You also get discounts on restaurants and entertainment!

3. Dubrovnik, Croatia

This wonderful Croatian city is one of next places on my list and the Old City is known as the ‘Pearl of the Adriatic’. Look familiar to you? That’s right you are looking at Kings Landing from Game of Thrones. You too can wander the streets (hopefully with no-one shouting ‘shame’ behind you) feeling like royalty.

This city is enchanting and you will find yourself walking around in awe. The location is perfect and you can spend your day walking the city walls, forts, there are stunning monasteries and the Baroque Cathedral of Assumption. There is so much history and you cannot miss a walk around the walls it is pretty strenuous but you can end the day with a cool off by jumping into the sea.

You can take a cable car up to Mt. Srd that takes approx. 4 minutes and gives you breath-taking views. Why not stop for some food in the Panorama Restaurant day or night and enjoy a meal with a difference. Also, if you're a fan of seafood then there are plenty of restaurants to choose from! Head to the Bota Sushi and Oyster bar close to the cathedral for amazing fresh food.

4. Berlin, Germany

One thing I can say about Berlin is that you will definitely want to go back. I spent 4 days in Berlin and covered a lot of ground but I still know there is so much more to see. You can spend a day exploring Berlin centre including Brandenburg Gate, we made sure we took a walk through the Holocaust memorial, which was quite overwhelming, and such a hard-hitting memorial but I think it is really important for anybody visiting Berlin to take time and walk through. You can then spend the rest of the day walking around Berlin heading to the iconic Checkpoint Charlie and strolling through the Tiergarten.

Another day can be spent heading to the East Side Gallery seeing the outstanding murals along the Berlin Wall and why not head to the Zoologishergarten area where you can see the Kaiser Wilhelm Church and take a stroll to Bikini Berlin, a shopping centre and then onto the luxury KaDeWe department store.

The transport system in Berlin is great and you can get around very easily. It may be slightly overwhelming at first but there are maps everywhere making it really clear. The food in Berlin is amazing and you have to try Currywurst! If you are looking for a budget place to eat then head to ‘Kantine Deluxe’ order your meal by tablet and collect your order it is extremely reasonably priced and you can have your first try of Currywurst and Schnitzel.

If you fancy luxury then head to the TV Tower giving you a 360-degree view of Berlin whilst you sit and have a delicious dinner with main courses costing around €20. I expected it to cost a lot more than that but make sure you book ahead so you do not miss out!

What interesting cities have you travelled to or that are on your ‘Book-it List’? You can find a post all about my trip to Berlin and more on my blog The-Book-it-List. Why not tweet me if you loved this article? You can also find me on Instagram
