A freshers' guide: meeting people and making friends

This freshers season we wanna help you get the most out of the next few years and make sure your uni experience is the greatest of all time! We’ve put together some handy guides on all things, from getting the grades to managing your money. Here are some tips on how to meet new people and make friends.

Put yourself out there

When you arrive at uni, it can feel daunting to start all over again and, for some, making new friends seems like a scary prospect. But, you have to remember that everyone is probably thinking the exact same thing as you. All anyone really wants to do is get over that first hurdle and make a connection with someone else. Even if you’re a naturally shy or reserved person, this is the perfect time to put yourself out there, because everyone else is on their own too.

If you see someone who is standing alone at a mixer event or something similar, go up to them and start a conversation. If they’re unfriendly or you don’t click, wish them a nice day and move on, but normally you’ll find that they’re just waiting for someone to connect with too.

Find your people

One of the best things about uni is how many people there are from different walks of life. Your first few months at uni are best for finding your own groove. Do you want to join a society? If so, are you more musical theatre or hockey? Feminist society? Or maybe your uni has a magic soc?! If you’re not an organised fun kinda person, are you the one arranging pre-drinks for the big freshers events? Or are you more interested in exploring your new city? Whatever it is, now is the time to do it! And sure enough whatever feels right for you, will help you find your tribe!

Be confident in yourself

Starting all over again can be scary but there are so many upsides to it as well. Unlike school, when you arrive at uni no one knows anything about you. If you were put in a box before, it’s time to step out and embrace who you are or even reinvent yourself, if that’s what you want. You might have always been harbouring a secret talent or maybe you were overshadowed by certain friends, well now is the time to be who YOU want to be without anyone judging you for it. So be confident in yourself and follow your gut.

Don’t compare yourself to others

When your flicking through your instagram and you see your school friends tagged in pictures with loads of new people, and you’ve only managed to make friends with the people in your flat, it’s easy to feel a sense of dread that every is making lots of friends, but you. Firstly, social media can be very deceiving and secondly, having a massive group of friends during freshers doesn’t really mean much as so much will change over the next few years. It doesn’t matter if you have a huge group of friends you meet up with at different times, or two good friends who you know have your back- whatever works for you is best.
