3 ways to make not having a career your career

If you’re anything like me, growing up you were probably told about the path you’ll take in life. You go to school, college, university and get a job, right?!

Well, it’s 2017 and if you don’t want to take that path, you don’t have to! I’ve always been one for finding my own way in life. Trying lots of different things, getting stuff wrong and learning about what works for me.

Now if you’re sat wondering what this all means. I’ve put together a concise list of a few options that are ready for you to take right now!

1. Have a portfolio career

You might not be familiar with the term ‘portfolio career’. It basically means, trying as many different jobs as your heart desires. You switch jobs when you feel ready and make a career out of experiencing all the world of work has to offer along the way.

Now you've likely been told that a varied CV won’t help you get a job. But whether you build houses or websites, there will be crossover skills in every job you take. It’s all about how you look at the things you’ve learnt and how those apply to your next role.

2. Become a freelancer

There has never been a better time to go freelance. Although you'll be told you won't make enough money. And people will judge you for working from home in your pyjamas, the world of freelance has a lot of benefits.

You get to pick a career that suits you, with a lot of lifestyle benefits that suit you too. Fancy hitting the gym when it’s quiet midday? Done. Need to take your ASOS returns to the post office before 3? Also done!

Selling yourself can be tricky. With freelancer websites and social media channels, you can build yourself a freelancer network. This'll be full of other solo workers and employers that can help you along the way.

3. Start a business

Being an ‘entrepreneur’ is a bit of a buzzword of the moment but it does have some reasoning behind it. Like going freelance, people are finding they can set up their own business from home and with less start-up cash than they realised.

If you’re struggling for ideas, look around you and find everyday things that you can provide to make someone's life better and solve a solution. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel and you definitely don’t need to create the next Instagram to strike it lucky. Seriously, one of my best friends makes a mint selling workwear online!

Hopefully, this impactful list gives you an idea of how you can make a go of something, even if you’re not quite feeling the 9-5 career life. Never think you can’t do something and never listen to what someone tells you to do, including me!
