10 Surfing Tips For Beginners

Our resident surfer dude Matt (no, not Matt wilkinson) has taken some time to share some of his top tips to help you become the next, well.. Matt Wilkinson!

1. Make sure you can swim and are comfortable holding your breath under water

2. Practise standing up on your board on land first.

It's harder in the water so you want to be comfortable popping up onto your feet on land before trying it in the water

3. Get the right gear

With 15% off at Surfstitch, be sure to buy the right gear for catching the waves like this TCSS 2mm Wetsuit Jacket.  Or go the whole hog with this O'Neill steamer. Article_SurfingForBeginners

4. Know what a rip is and how to spot them in the ocean.

They can be your best friend in getting out the back or your worst enemy trying to come back in

5. Surf with someone who can teach you in the water

6. Start with small waves and try and find somewhere uncrowded

7. Don't panic. It's just water

8. Paddle as hard as you can when catching waves and don't stand up too early

9. Learn about surf etiquette.

Nothing worse than a crusty old salt dog yelling at you for dropping in when you don't know the rules

10. Have fun!!
