Guest blogger FAQs: What you need to know

So, you've seen our post about why you should guest blog and you want to get involved? Read on for the lowdown!

How do I get in touch?

Contact blogger.enquiries@myunidays.com and be sure to include in your message:

  • Some original ideas
  • What topics you're into (e.g. tech, music etc.)
  • If you've had any previous writing experience before
  • Any links to blogs or websites that you've contributed to
  • Students that email in with original title ideas are much more likely to get chosen as a guest blogger as we love fresh ideas!

Is this a paid gig?

At the moment, no. This is the perfect platform for you to showcase your writing to thousands of people and a great way to gain editorial experience. This is a great addition to your CV if you're interested in writing, journalism, marketing or PR careers.

How do I know what I can write?

We'll discuss ideas over email and there are always posts on our schedule that we'll need writing.

Are there any guidelines?

We want you to have your own voice and your own tone but it's also important to make sure things aren't too personal. For example, 'My top 5 beauty picks of the month" would be perfect for a personal blog. Your readers are only there for you on a personal blog but it's a little too personal for The Edit. A different take for The Edit would be "5 beauty products you need in your kit this summer". These could be summer-themed or new releases and the post would have your opinion. It would also include information about the products so it's useful to the reader.

The big one is to ensure you have proofread your post before sending it to us. We recommend downloading apps like Grammarly which is a grammar checking plugin for Google Chrome. This is a lifesaver for rogue commas and capital letters. If a post is sent over that hasn’t been checked properly then it will just be sent back for another review.

We would also like you to run your blog post through Hemingwayapp.com. This is a great tool that shows any hard to read sentences in yellow and really hard to read sentences in red. Your post should have absolutely no really hard to read sentences!

How do I submit my post?

You can simply email a word document with your post in it.

When will my post go live?

When it’s decided what your post will be, your contact at UNiDAYS will give you a date that it should go live. We will try to send over links when posts are live but sometimes we can have up to 20 blog posts a week so this might not be possible. If there is going to be a delay in your post going live then we'll let you know.

What else do you need?

We will need a square, good quality profile photo to upload to your post. An Instagram selfie is fine, make sure your whole face is in the photo and no Snapchat filters, please!

We will also want to link to something for your own promotion. Let us know your LinkedIn, blog URL, Twitter handles, anything you want to promote.

What about images for my post?

We will need a high-quality image for the 'hero' of the post, this means the main image that you'll see on the homepage and at the top of the blog post. This needs to be a hi-res image or a great quality Instagram post.

We can also embed Pinterest and Instagram images into your blog post so attach these into the post if you'd like to include them.

Finally, it's impossible to save images from word documents so please attach them to the email or include their sources. We will need every source of each image for copyright reasons anyway.

What promotion do I get?

We put all our blog posts on our Facebook page, our Twitter page and sometimes in newsletter emails and on-site. There are plenty of opportunities for your blog post to be seen by thousands of people!

Final checklist

When sending over your blog post, make sure you're including or have done these things...

  • Attach a profile picture
  • Include social links for your self-promotion
  • Full name (in case we have more than one Tom, more than one Megan etc!)
  • A word document with a fully proofread post with grammar and spelling checks already done
  • Any images that you want to include and the sources (where you got them from)
