9 ways to take care of your mind AND body

Treat yourself

No matter the time of the year or time of day, it's very important to take care of your mind and body. Taking care of yourself isn’t as hard as people like to make it seem. It’s not difficult at all; in fact, making small changes in your daily routine really makes all the difference, and can be the difference between an unhealthy mind and a healthy mind.

1. Get out there and socialize

Regular social activity helps memory and can sometimes help improve your emotions. It's good for your body and mind alike to get out there, change your scenery, and interact with other people. Of course, different amounts of socialization are best for different people, so make sure to push yourself outside of your comfort zone, but don't overdo it!

2. Don’t Multitask

As much as we all try to be our own superhero and check our email while on the phone, studies have shown that multitasking actually does us more harm than good. Not only that, but it has been proven that it makes you less productive. It is much more efficient to focus on one task at a time rather than multiple tasks at once.

3. Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We are always told this in school, as we are encouraged to have a healthy and well-balanced breakfast. Breakfast not only helps your health by increasing Glucose levels, but it keeps your energy up throughout the day.

4. Go To Bed On Time

It may seem like a good idea at the moment to stay up and binge your favorite show, or stay up and do that last-minute thing you said you’d do two weeks ago, but somehow the two weeks have gone and now it’s a day before. No matter what the deadline is, it is not worth your sleep. Whatever it is that you need to do will be there in the morning.

5. Choose Happiness

It’s hard to choose happiness in a moment when all you see is sadness or anger. Choosing to be happy in a moment that isn’t the best moment, can change that moment. Your mood can change things and make a situation better. Focus on being happy when you can.

6. Eat Right

Eating junk food tends to feel good in the moment but often leads to a sugar crash later in the day. Reaching for an apple instead of a bag of chips will feel better in the long run. That piece of fruit will also keep you full for longer, and your body will appreciate it.

7. Get Exercise

This tip is common sense yet most of us do not do something as simple as go out for a walk. The beautiful thing about this tip is that there is no need for fancy equipment or an expensive gym membership. Just get out of your house and go for a walk or visit your local park and ride a bike. Do an activity that keeps you moving.

8. Keep Up With The News

If you don’t like watching news on television, keep up with events you care about. Find an area that you are interested in learning about and keep current with it. Keeping up to date with the news keeps your brain simulated.

9. Start Each Day With A Grateful Heart

This last tip may seem redundant but if you choose to use any of the tips, I would emphasize the importance of this one. This tip is very important because we need to appreciate what we have. In the words of T.I. and Rihanna “Stop lookin’ at what you ain’t got. And start being thankful for what you do got.” People who are content and grateful for what they have are often more happy because they are focusing on the good in their lives.
