10 places to drink German beer in London

It’s a well-known fact that the people of Germany love their beer. So much so, that they have a purity law, meaning there are only three ingredients allowed into their famed creations. With this in mind, it’s only right that you culture-savvy students make it your business to try some of Germany’s purest pints for German Beer Day (23rd April!).

Luckily for you, the Bavarian love of pure beer has taken London by storm, so you don’t have to go all the way to Germany to sample it. We know exactly where to find these spots across the capital. From traditional bierkellers to snazzy German restaurants, you’ll be chugging beer and yelling ‘prost!’ in no time.

1. Bavarian Beer House

Expect waiting staff in all-out-Bavarian dress serving you a spectacular selection of beer in big ol’ steins. With everything from Dunkel to Löwenbräu on offer, you’re guaranteed a raucous affair, no matter what day of the week you visit. They’ll also have a cracking deal on every night to help you save on cash. Head here for ‘Wurst Wednesday’ where you can nab a sausage platter and pint of German beer for £15! Or, head down here on Sundays for a Munich pork roast and pint of German beer for the same price.

2. Bierschenke

Luckily for you thirsty lot there’s a Munich-style bierkeller in the heart of London and it’s a stone’s throw away from Liverpool Street. Step inside Bierschenke to meet Bavarian-style waiters serving Germany’s most famed beers. Their four signatures are created by traditional Bavarian craft beer brewery Müllerbräu of Neuötting, so it really doesn't get much more German than this. Head down here on a Tuesday, and you can get a traditional currywurst and a pint of Bierschenke beer for just £9.90.

3. Oktoberfest Pub

This Fulham pub strives to bring the spirit of the popular Munich festival, Oktoberfest, to Londoners every single day of the year. Arguably the most German hangout in the capital! Octoberfest Pub also stocks the largest selection of German beer in the UK; there are over 60 types to choose from.

4. Munich Cricket Club

Venture to the heart of Victoria for German Beer Day and take refuge in Munich Cricket Club, a German bierkeller with a modern twist. You can nab a larger-than-life stein here from just £9, and they have a popular club haus beer if their nine draft beers don’t do it for you. They also serve loads of German grub and they have a German-themed cocktail list. Head down here from the 21st April for Oompah band performances and special edition beers from Lowenbrau and Spaten for their Spring festival.

5. Katzenjammers

If you're after an effortlessly cool bierkeller to drink up the best of Germany’s beers in London, look no further than Katzenjammers. This joint boasts a 200 seater bierhall, with a German sausage bar and a central stage where you can catch live Oompah bands. There's also a restaurant upstairs where you can try some authentic Bavarian cuisine when hunger comes knocking.

6. Zietgiest

Fancy drinking German pints in Charlie Chaplin's old regular? This Lambeth boozer has been a pub in some guise or another for 120 years, and is now known as the Zeitgeist; London’s first German gastropub. As you’d expect, their German beer game is strong, with over 18 varieties on tap and 30 bottles waiting to be popped in the fridge. If you get peckish, they serve an excellent range of authentic German eats, from schnitzels to bratwurst sausages.

7. The Priory Arms

A haven for beer lovers; it’s no wonder that this beer-loving boozer in Stockwell stocks over 10 authentic German beers. Their menu is split into different sections; so whether you’re thirsty for a wheaty Weisse or dark Marzen, it won’t be hard to find your favourite refreshment. If you get peckish, they’ve got Brixton’s Jalisco providing authentic Mexican eats.

8. Stein's Bavarian Experience

If you're after a truly unique Bavarian experience on German Beer Day, you should mosey on down to Kingston. Nab a seat on the river terrace or head indoors to the wood-laden chalet, where an authentic German theme runs throughout! From the decor right through to the delicious Bavarian grub and of course, the beer. With over 10 varieties to choose from, you can expect imports from the Oktoberfest breweries and famed Bavarian draughts, all brought to you in a giant boot-shaped glass.

9. The Tiroler Hut

If you want to drink German beer in London, there’s no better place than The Tiroler Hut. This Austrian family-run restaurant has been around for 50 years now, head down for German Beer Day and you’ll find out why. Expect delicious grub, alongside authentic Austrian entertainment drawing in the crowds.

10. German Gymnasium

German Gymnasium is England's first ever purpose built gym. Funded in the 1800s by German communities, this place offers the perfect excuse to drink beer in a swanky restaurant steeped in German history. You’ll be pleased to hear that this venue’s no one trick pony either. It boasts an all-day grand cafe, a restaurant, outdoor bar terrace and a glamourous meister bar. With around 15 German beers to choose from, this place is a great shout for the big day.
