7 of the best Spanish city breaks

The summer is here and we’re all in need of a weekend break, am I right? With so many reasonably priced flights to Spain available, I've gathered 7 of the top city breaks for you to enjoy this summer!

1. Seville

Seville has a certain charm and if you haven’t experienced it yet, get yourself there this summer! As the capital of Andalusia, Seville has so much to offer. For all you budding photographers out there, its amazing architecture is a winner for Instagram. Did I mention it’s known as the frying pan of Europe due to the heat?

Top tip: Don’t forget to pack your dancing shoes - Seville is the home of flamenco.

2. Madrid

The capital is a must on this list because there’s so much to explore. Like any capital city, every time you go, there’s more waiting for you to discover! With so many connections to Madrid, it should be easy enough to get there - and for a good price too. Don’t forget to rent a pedalo on the lake in Retiro Park for a chilled afternoon in the sun.

Top tip: The metro is a great way of finding hidden treasures in Madrid - be adventurous!

3. Santiago de Compostela

Although it’s known for the Camino de Santiago, you can definitely visit without walking hundreds of miles! The labyrinth of streets in the old town has to be top of the list and, if you’re feeling brave, try some of the local Galician-style octopus.

Top tip: Try wandering through the streets in the evening rather than being lazy at the hotel. It feels like a different city after dark!

4. Barcelona

This list wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Barcelona. A bit cliché, I know, but how many cities do you know that have a beach as well? Barcelona is ideal for pleasing both people who like lazy beach holidays and those who like city breaks. Check out Eleanor's tips on how to do Barca on a budget too.

Top tip: Hungry? Avoid the touristy Las Ramblas for food - have a wander through the back streets and see what you find!

5. Granada

Granada is such a beautiful, historic city and ideal for a weekend break away. You can wander around the cobbled streets during the day and make the most of tapas with a few beers in the evening. What’s there not to like?

Top tip: La Alhambra is a must, but don’t forget to pre-book your tickets to avoid the queues!

6. Valencia

Another city with an incredible beach - erm, yes please. For anyone who is a foodie, paella valenciana is to die for and if you’re into your seafood, Valencia will be right up your street.

Top tip: If you’re feeling fit, climbing the Micalet Tower is so worth it for the view over the city!

7. San Sebastian

With arguably one of the best city beaches in Europe, this Basque city definitely makes this list. If you prefer cities that aren’t as mainstream, this one is for you. Avoid the tourists and eat at some of the fanciest restaurants in the country.

Top tip: If you’re a cider fan, make sure you pay a visit to one of the city’s cider houses!
